No matter if you are building a new wood shop, is expanding or changing wood working equipment it is very important to have adequate dust collection in your shop. There are several reasons for always making sure you have enough suction and properly designed ductwork and dust collector(s) including:
1) health and well being of the workers in the shop
2) following the law
3) have a clean shop
4) have your tools and machines last longer and
5) get the best possible looking end product.
This web-site is intended to be a check-list of what needs to be looked at, decided and done when looking at a new or expansion of an existing dust collection system in a wood shop.
Before going ahead and do too much it is very important to make sure you do everything correctly and make sure everything has been covered before purchasing your new dust collector and duct work. The famous "measure twice and cut once" certainly apply when putting in a new dust collection system - for instance you should ask yourself these questions:
1) Do you plan / want the collector(s) to be inside or outside? (pros and cons but also things which have to be met)
2) Do you need to be able to run all the machines at same time or can you go for a smaller system and use blast gates The dust collector should be designed to handle "worst case scenario" (including near future expansions)
3) How much dust do you generate and how do you plan to collect and dispose the dust? (plastic bags, drums, tip-bin, dumpster, relay system, briketter etc)
4) Do you know what the NFPA tells you you need to comply by?
5) Are you located in a seismic zone?
6) Do you pay to get rid of the wood dust or do you get paid for it?
7) For outdoor collectors do you want / need to return the air?
8) Do you plan on saving lots of money and install the duct yourself? If so you are at the right place as the Clamp-together style duct with the 3D drawing and step by step manual on exactly how to put all the pieces together makes buying from us the easiest and most cost efficient option.
Next what you want to do is make a to scale shop layout if you do not already have one. It does not have to be done in CAD - a sketch on paper will work just as fine as long as it is to scale. This will give you a better understanding of the production flow and you will be able to get other to give you inputs.
The drawing is also crucial to make sure your end up with a correct size dust collector. Make sure that all machine ports are accounted for. In order to connect correctly to each machine a port diameter and ideally location of the port (height above ground and if positioned vertically or horizontally) in order to make sure you get the correct parts to connect to all the machines. Also, do not forget the dust collector - if it has a flanged inlet you will need to provide the flange hole pattern in order to make sure you will be able to connect the duct to the dust collector.
